With cooler temperatures, pine forests, and tons of easy hikes, waterfalls, and creek access, Payson is perfect for a day trip or a weekend escape with kids.

🌲 Horton Creek Trail (Easy Kid-Friendly Hike in Payson)


Horton Creek Trail is one of the best easy hikes in Payson for families.


This spot checks every box if you’re visiting with kids:

  • Flat, shaded trails

  • Creek access for splashing and fishing

  • Picnic tables

  • Bathrooms near the trailhead

  • Plenty of secluded spots to relax


This is more than just a hike, it’s the kind of place you can spend hours letting your kids explore nature. You don't have to finish the entire hike, the whole trail is 9 miles but we have never gone more than a couple. They also have campsites available.

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park (Must-Visit in Payson)


Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is one of the most unique attractions in Arizona and a must-stop when visiting Payson.


What to know before you go:

  • Don’t miss the Waterfall Trail, it's the first trail, the park rangers will give you a map at check-in.

  • Wear shoes with good traction - it can be slippery. I linked some good kids water shoes/hiking shoes at the bottom of this blog.

  • Expect stairs and a bit of a workout, but doable with kids if you take your time

  • Bring water, especially in warmer months

  • Watch for Javalinas! We seen them in the parking lot.


Seeing the natural bridge with water flowing underneath it is one of the most memorable things to do in Payson with kids. Yes, you can climb down and play underneath he bridge. This is a state park so remember to check opening and closing times and anything other special announcements from them before planning your trip.


Water Wheel Falls (Easy Waterfall Hike in Payson)

Water Wheel Falls Hiking Trail is one of the most popular waterfall hikes in Payson, Arizona.


Why families love it:

  • Short, easy trail (the whole thing is less than 2 miles)

  • Multiple waterfall areas

  • Perfect for splashing, climbing, and exploring

  • Plenty of places to swim, and also cliff jumping.

  • Again - safe water shoes.

  • Make sure to bring safe floats for the kids. There are currents, and some places get deep.

  • Make sure to check the weather before going - do not go if there is expected bad weather because it can be a flood spot.


Important tip: This is a busy spot - arrive early to get parking, especially on weekends. Make sure to bring trash bags!

Hidden Creek Spots Near Water Wheel Falls

If you want something quieter than Water Wheel Falls, keep driving up the road.


You’ll find:

  • Scenic creek pull-offs

  • Less crowded picnic areas

  • More space for kids to play


A great option is Glen Verde Campground:

  • Offers “day use only” areas but if you continue farther up the road near Glen Verde Campground, you’ll also find dispersed camping spots in Payson with creek access that feel way more secluded.Easy creek access
