Looking for an easy summer escape from the Arizona heat? A day trip to Flagstaff is one of our favorite ways to cool down, explore somewhere new, and make family memories. It's truly one of the prettiest mountain towns. It feels so far from the desert, yet it's just a day trip away!
.
This itinerary is perfect if you’re visiting with kids and want a mix of outdoor adventure, downtown exploring, and amazing local food, all in one day.

Start Your Morning at the Barefoot Trail
The Barefoot Trail opens at 8 AM, and getting there early is one of our biggest tips for summer.
Not only are temperatures cooler in the morning, but you’ll also beat the crowds and have more time to explore at your own pace.
The Barefoot Trail is such a unique experience for families. Kids can walk through mud, water, rocks, sand, and different textures designed to connect you with nature in a fun, hands-on way. Expect to get messy — in the best way possible.
Tips for Visiting the Barefoot Trail
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
Bring towels and a full change of clothes for kids
Pack water and snacks
Plan about 2 hours to fully explore
If you’re visiting Flagstaff during summer, this is easily one of the most unique family-friendly activities in Northern Arizona.

Explore Downtown Flagstaff
After the Barefoot Trail, head into downtown Flagstaff for a slower-paced afternoon.
Downtown is full of local shops, coffee spots, bookstores, and mountain-town charm.
Summer weather in Flagstaff makes it especially fun to just wander around and explore.
One of our favorite stops is Bright Side Bookshop. If you love independent bookstores, this one is worth adding to your itinerary. It has a cozy atmosphere, a great children’s section, and the kind of small-town feel that makes you want to stay awhile.

Grab Lunch at Fratelli Pizza
No trip to Flagstaff feels complete without pizza from Fratelli Pizza.
This has become our go-to pizza stop every time we’re in town. It’s casual, family-friendly, and consistently delicious.
Their pizza is perfect for sharing after a busy day outside, and it’s one of those local places that really feels like part of the Flagstaff experience. They were even voted Best Pizza in Flagstaff!
If you’re searching for the perfect family-friendly summer day trip from Phoenix, this Flagstaff itinerary is such an easy and memorable option. Between the Barefoot Trail, downtown shopping, and local pizza, it’s the kind of Arizona summer day that feels simple but special.

You're in the mountains so make sure to have Bug Spray - love this safe option for our family plus it works.
Our favorite Travel Stroller - Walking downtown can be a lot of walking so I definitely recommend bringing a stroller for little ones.
