Carbon County Wyoming: An Underrated Family Adventure You'll Want to Visit Before Everyone Else Finds Out About It
If you're looking for a family destination with breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventure, small-town charm, and far fewer crowds than Wyoming's more famous destinations, Carbon County deserves a spot on your travel list.
We recently spent several days exploring Carbon County, Wyoming, and it quickly became one of our favorite hidden gems in the West. From kayaking on quiet lakes and swimming in crystal-clear water to exploring historic attractions and enjoying local restaurants, this trip had the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation for families.

Getting to Carbon County Wyoming
We flew from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to Denver International Airport, which offers affordable direct flights from Arizona. From Denver, we rented a car and made the 3.5-hour drive to Rawlins, Wyoming.
The drive itself is beautiful, with wide-open landscapes, mountain views, and plenty of opportunities to appreciate the scenery along the way. Compared to flying directly into many mountain destinations, this route can be a surprisingly budget-friendly way for families to experience Wyoming.
Where to Stay in Carbon County
During our visit, we stayed at the Best Western CottonTree Inn in Rawlins - Book Here
The location made it easy to explore attractions throughout Carbon County while still being close to restaurants and local businesses. Our kids especially loved ending each day in the indoor pool and hot tub, while the complimentary breakfast made mornings simple before heading out for the next adventure.
For families looking for a comfortable and convenient home base, this was a great option.

Seminoe State Park: One of Wyoming's Most
Beautiful Hidden Gems
If there's one place that completely exceeded our expectations, it was Seminoe State Park.
The towering rock formations, stunning blue water, and wide-open landscapes looked like something straight out of a postcard. Despite the incredible scenery, the park felt peaceful and uncrowded during our visit.
Families can enjoy:
Swimming
Fishing
Kayaking
Boating
Camping
Wildlife viewing
Scenic picnics
We packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed what may have been the most scenic picnic spot we've ever experienced. The views seemed to stretch forever in every direction.
If you're searching for lesser-known Wyoming state parks, Seminoe State Park deserves to be at the top of your list.

Kayaking at Rim Lake
One of our favorite family experiences was spending time at Rim Lake.
Before heading out, we stopped by Great Divide Outdoors in Rawlins and rented an inflatable kayak. The process was easy, and it allowed us to enjoy the lake without needing to travel with our own equipment. They had life jackets and it was only $60 for a 2 person kayak for 24 hours. The owners were so helpful and nice, and the store has the cutest finds on top of the kayak and paddleboard rentals.
At Rim Lake, we found ourselves surrounded by beautiful Wyoming scenery with plenty of space to explore. The kids played along the shoreline while we paddled through calm water and took in the peaceful surroundings.
It felt like we had an entire section of the lake to ourselves.
For families looking for outdoor adventures in Wyoming, this is a simple and memorable experience. You can also kayak on Lake Seminoe but there are motorized boats on that lake and it's much bigger so we were more comfortable kayaking at Rim Lake.
Rim lake is only about 7 miles outside of Rawlins.

Step Back in Time at the Wyoming Frontier Prison
History lovers won't want to miss the Wyoming Frontier Prison.
Located in Rawlins, this historic prison operated from 1901 to 1981 and offers guided tours that bring Wyoming's fascinating past to life.
The stories, architecture, and preserved spaces make this one of the most unique attractions in Carbon County. Even our kids found the experience interesting and engaging.
It's a great way to balance outdoor adventure with a little local history during your trip.
The tours were $15 per person. Our 2 year old was free. They are guided tours that last an hour. Check their website before going for updated tour times and prices.
Where to Eat in Rawlins Wyoming
One of the best parts of exploring a new destination is discovering local restaurants, and Rawlins had several memorable spots.
Shogun Pizza
After a full day of outdoor adventure, grabbing pizza from Shogun Pizza was the perfect way to relax and recharge. It's a great takeout option for families staying nearby.
Penny's Diner
If you're looking for a classic Wyoming diner experience, Penny's Diner was great. The nostalgic atmosphere and comfort food made it one of our favorite local spots.
Rochelle Ranch Golf Course
Even if you're not planning to golf, Rochelle Ranch Golf Course is worth visiting for the views alone. The scenery surrounding the course is beautiful, and it was a fun stop during our trip.
Why Families Will Love Carbon County Wyoming
What makes Carbon County special isn't just one attraction.
It's the combination of outdoor adventure, small-town hospitality, incredible scenery, and the feeling that you've discovered a place most travelers haven't found yet.
You won't find long lines, crowded viewpoints, or packed parking lots. Instead, you'll find room to explore, room to relax, and opportunities to create unforgettable family memories.
Whether you're kayaking at Rim Lake, swimming at Seminoe State Park, touring the Wyoming Frontier Prison, or enjoying a local meal in Rawlins, Carbon County offers the kind of authentic Wyoming experience that's becoming harder to find.
One thing we missed that is definitely top of our list for the future is visiting Saratoga Hot Springs. Not a far drive from Rawlins, but during our visit I was 8 months pregnant with a 2 year old so it didn't quite fit our itinerary. Next time!
Traveling with kids? Here's some gear to make it easier for you:
Our favorite travel game for the older kids ages 6+
Foldable and hanging Toiletry Bag - You'll be surprised how much this can fit and it keeps the small hotel room more organized with a family.
Canopy Sleep Soother - I can't imagine trying to sleep in a hotel room without this. It's very small to pack and it even has a hook if needed for a backpack.
