If you’re looking for an affordable Southern California family vacation, let me introduce you to one of the most underrated destinations: Buena Park, California.

Just a short drive from Arizona (it took us 4 hours from Buckeye), Buena Park is packed with family-friendly attractions, great food, and nonstop entertainment, without the overwhelm (or price tag) of bigger tourist cities.

Here’s exactly how to plan the perfect Buena Park family itinerary for a weekend trip, and you can check out our full YouTube vlog HERE

Why Visit Buena Park with Kids?

Buena Park has been named one of the most fun small towns in America and after visiting, we totally understand why.

What makes it so great for families?

  • Everything is close together (huge win with kids)

  • Tons of attractions for all ages, from toddlers to teens

  • More affordable than nearby SoCal hotspots

  • Easy access to Disneyland, beaches, and LA

It’s the kind of place where you can pack a lot of fun into a short trip.

Knott's Soak City in Buena Park California

Day 1: Check-In + Dinner Show Fun

We stayed at Knott’s Hotel, and it was the perfect home base for our trip.

  • Comfortable, family-friendly rooms

  • Walking distance to major attractions

  • Easy parking and central location

If you’re traveling with kids, convenience matters and this made everything so much easier. Especially having a baby and being close to the hotel for naps and any unexpected things that might come out. I wondered so much before we left if it was worth paying a little more and I promise IT IS. The hotel is part of the fun of the trip.

Medieval Times in Buena Park California

Dinner at Medieval Times

Kick off your trip with one of the most fun dining experiences for kids: Medieval Times.

This is not your typical dinner, it’s a full-on show.

  • Kids get crowns and are assigned a knight to cheer for

  • Live jousting, sword fights, and horses

  • Hands-on dining (yes, you eat with your hands)

Our kids were completely into it the entire time and our knight even won, which made it extra exciting.

Knott's Soak City Water Park in Buena Park California

Day 2: Water Park + Family Entertainment

Spend the Day at Knott’s Soak City

If you’re visiting in warmer months, Knott’s Soak City is a must.

This water park truly has something for every age:

  • Big slides for thrill seekers

  • Splash zones for little kids

  • A lazy river the whole family can enjoy

We spent hours here, and no one wanted to leave, which is always a good sign on a family trip.

TIP: You can bring your own floats but they have to be US Coast Guard certified. We did not bring our own and they had life jackets that fit all of our kids, including the baby. You can also bring your own cooler if you want. We just ate there because we didn't want to make a stop at the store to get things, and got the refilling cups for drinks (worth it).

Evening at John’s Incredible Pizza

After a full day, this was the perfect way to keep the fun going.

John’s Incredible Pizza is part restaurant, part arcade, part entertainment center.

  • All-you-can-eat buffet

  • Arcade games and prizes

  • Indoor rides and bumper cars

It’s basically a one-stop spot where kids can eat and play for hours.

Day 3: Porto’s Bakery (Worth the Hype)

Before heading home, make a stop at Porto’s Bakery.

This place is famous for a reason:

  • Expect a line (it moves fast)

  • Pastries, breakfast, and Cuban-inspired dishes

  • Everything we tried was incredible

If you’re a foodie family, this is a MUST. Check out this YouTube Review we did and you'll see!

Things We Didn’t Get to (But Are on Our List for Next Time)

Even though we packed a lot into our weekend, there’s still so much more to do in Buena Park and the surrounding area. These are at the top of our list for our next visit:

Knott’s Berry Farm

We stayed right next to Knott’s Berry Farm and didn’t even have time to go, which just means we already have a reason to come back.

This iconic theme park is known for:

  • Family-friendly rides and thrill coasters

  • Seasonal events like Knott’s Scary Farm and Boysenberry Festival

  • A great mix of entertainment for all ages

If you’re planning a longer trip, this is definitely a must-do.

Shopping Near Buena Park

If you love adding a little shopping into your trips, there are some great options nearby.

Buena Park Downtown is right in the heart of the area with shops, dining, and entertainment.

You’re also a short drive from bigger shopping destinations like:

  • South Coast Plaza (one of the largest malls in California)

  • The Outlets at Orange (great for deals and family-friendly stores)

Beaches Just a Short Drive Away

One of the best parts about staying in Buena Park is how close you are to the coast.

Within about 20–30 minutes, you can be at some of Southern California’s most beautiful beaches:

  • Huntington Beach — perfect for families, with wide sandy shores and a fun pier

  • Seal Beach — a quieter, more laid-back option

  • Newport Beach — great for a classic SoCal beach day

Next time, we’re definitely adding a beach day to our itinerary.

How Far is Buena Park from Arizona?

For Arizona families, this trip is surprisingly easy.

  • About a 5-hour drive from Phoenix

  • Perfect for a weekend road trip

  • No flights, no airport stress

It’s one of the most doable SoCal getaways for families.

Is Buena Park Worth It for Families?

YES!

What stood out most to us wasn’t just the attractions, it was how easy and fun everything felt.

With kids of different ages, it’s rare to find a destination where everyone is equally entertained.

And the biggest win? We didn’t hear “I’m bored” once.
