The drive to Silverton is one of the most scenic road trips in the Southwest.

Route overview:

  • Start in Phoenix, Arizona

  • Drive through northern Arizona’s red rocks and forests

  • Stop at Four Corners National Monument - Don't miss this! It's not out of the way at all and so worth it. It was a great stop to break up our trip.

  • Continue into Colorado via the Million Dollar Highway

  • We stopped in Durango just to see the town and get coffee. If you want to pick things up at Walmart this is your last stop before Silverton.

The whole drive was about 10 hours with stops. We took our time and enjoyed it. This route gives you a mix of desert landscapes, forest views, and dramatic mountain scenery. Check out our whole VLOG here: YouTube

Tips for Visiting Silverton with Kids

  • Bring layers (weather changes quickly in the mountains)

  • Book the train ride in advance

  • Take your time, this is a place to slow down, not a hectic back to back type of vacation schedule.

  • Make sure if you need things for food, snacks, etc you stop in Durango because Silverton is a good hour drive. There is a small local market and plenty of local food spots but for anything else or to get baby diapers, sunscreen, snacks, etc you will want to stop.

Why Silverton is Worth the Trip

Silverton isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience.

It’s where history, adventure, and nature all come together. It’s where kids can explore, parents can slow down, and everyone leaves with memories that last.

Gear to make your trip easier:

  • Make sure to bring bug spray - we love this one and it's safe for the whole family, spray it on clothes, shoes etc.

  • Our Outdoor Portable Grill was the hero of this trip. We loved being able to just find a spot outside and cook food.

  • Make sure your kids are in good outdoor/hiking shoes, we love these for only $40
