The Perfect Silver City New Mexico Itinerary from Phoenix
If you’re looking for a unique and family-friendly road trip, this Silver City New Mexico itinerary is one of the best hidden gems in the Southwest. Just about a 5-hour drive from Phoenix, Silver City offers incredible food, outdoor adventures, and a creative, artsy vibe that makes it perfect for a weekend getaway.

Day 1
We headed out Thursday evening and made the drive part of the experience by stopping at The Thing - a quirky roadside attraction that’s perfect for breaking up the drive with kids.
Where to Stay in Silver City, New Mexico
We stayed in a charming 1800s farmhouse in downtown Silver City that had been fully modernized while still keeping all of its character - Book Here
✔️ Pet-friendly
✔️ Walking distance to downtown
✔️ Perfect for families
The location made it easy to explore everything without needing to drive much once we arrived. It also just added so much to the experience to stay in an old 1800s home, and learning the history.
After settling in, we headed to Jalisco's and WOW.
Some of the best New Mexican food we’ve ever had. This ended up being one of our favorite meals of the entire trip, and honestly set the tone for what we quickly realized:
Silver City is a total foodie destination.
Day 2: Coffee, Picnics & The Most Unique Hike
Breakfast + Local Market Stop
We started our first full day at Adobe Springs Cafe: a cozy little downtown spot with what I can confidently say were the best homemade biscuits I’ve ever had.
After breakfast, we stopped by the Silver City Food Co-op to grab snacks and pack a cooler for a picnic (highly recommend doing this before heading out for the day).

The Catwalk Recreation Area (A Must-Do!)
We hit the road for an adventure and this ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip.
About 1 hour 15 minutes from Silver City is the Catwalk Recreation Area.
$5 parking
~1.5 mile trail
Family-friendly
Absolutely breathtaking
You’re walking along a narrow canyon, sometimes on pathways built right above a flowing creek, it truly feels like you’re on a “catwalk” through nature.
Hands down one of the coolest hikes we’ve ever done as a family.
Dinner: A Step Back in Time
That evening, we headed to Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House for dinner.
This place is an experience.
An old 1800s steakhouse with so much history and if you go, ask your server to show you the opera house next door. It genuinely felt like stepping back in time.
And the food? So good.
Day 2: Slow Morning + Exploring Downtown
Coffee & Slow Travel Moments
We started the morning at Tranquilbuzz Coffee House and this might have been my favorite moment of the trip.
Think:
Outdoor seating
A peaceful pond
A garden setting
We stayed for over an hour while the kids played chess and our toddler made friends with the local dogs. It was one of those slow, meaningful travel moments you don’t forget. Also, their coffee and chai's were amazing. They even use coffee ice cubes in their iced coffee!
Art, Shopping & Small-Town Charm
After coffee, we explored downtown Silver City, this town is so unique.
It’s known for its art scene, and the galleries here are unlike anything I’ve seen before. So many one-of-a-kind pieces, bold creativity, and that eclectic charm that makes you want to wander slowly and take it all in.
Pizza Night + Ice Cream
We kept dinner easy and grabbed takeout from Whiskey Creek Zócalo, then headed to Ice Cream Emporium for dessert.
Homemade ice cream + a relaxed evening back at the house = the perfect way to end the day.

Day 3: Exploring City of Rocks State Park
Before heading home, we made one last stop at City of Rocks State Park, about 40 minutes from Silver City.
$10 entrance
Massive rock formations
Natural “caves” and passageways
The kids had the best time climbing, exploring, and imagining, it truly felt like another world. This spot here is worth visiting this part of New Mexico!
Silver City completely surprised us in the best way. Between the incredible food, the outdoor adventures, and the artsy, welcoming vibe, it’s one of those places that feels both exciting and relaxing at the same time.
If you’re looking for a road trip that’s:
Family-friendly
Unique (not overcrowded)
Full of memorable experiences
Silver City should be at the top of your list.
Travel Gear Essentials: This is our go-to Trailer Hitch - It's so easy to put on and off, it takes my husband like 5 minutes. It comes with packing cubes, all the attachment gear you need, and a weatherproof bag. We've taken this thing everywhere from day trips, lake days and even a 15 hour road trip to San Francisco. It folds up when not in use!
Make sure the kids have good Hiking Shoes for the outdoor adventures.
