If you’re looking for an easy, family-friendly weekend trip in Arizona, Williams is one of our favorite little towns to base yourself. It’s charming, super walkable, and just about an hour from the Grand Canyon, so you get the best of both worlds.
We’ve done this trip with our kids (and even with a baby), and it’s one of those getaways that just works, minimal driving, lots to do outdoors, and plenty of ways to keep it fun for everyone. It's also such a great escape from the desert heat if you live in Phoenix.

Why Williams is Perfect for Families
Williams is known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon,” but honestly, it deserves its own spotlight.
Everything is close together, which makes it so much easier with kids. You can walk Route 66, grab dinner, and explore without constantly loading everyone back into the car.
It has that nostalgic, small-town feel but with just enough to do to keep your weekend full.
Where to Stay in Williams (Family-Friendly Options)
🚂 Grand Canyon Railway Hotel - Book Here
This is probably our favorite place to stay with kids.
Indoor pool + hot tub (huge win year-round)
On-site train experience to the Grand Canyon 🚂
Fred Harvey buffet (so easy with kids, and actually really good)
Walking distance from shops and restaurants in town.
It just makes the whole trip feel like an experience, not just a place to sleep.

🌲 Backland Glamping (Unique Stay) - Book Here
If you want something completely different, this is it.
Backland is all about unplugging and connecting with nature.
Stargazing (some of the best skies in Arizona)
A lake, beach, kayaks, frog hunting, trails
Peaceful, quiet surroundings
Breakfast is included and they have a chef for lunch and dinner
Smores by the fire every night
They are prepared with plenty of board games and outside games for the kids
It’s definitely more of an experience stay vs. convenience but so worth it.

If you just want something simple, affordable, and close to everything, this is a great option.
Indoor pool + hot tub
Free breakfast

Sample Weekend Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive + Explore Route 66
Arrive in Williams, check into your hotel, and head straight to downtown.
This is one of our favorite parts, just walking around, popping into shops, and letting the kids explore.
👉 Dinner at Goldie’s Route 66 DinerThis place is a must. It’s casual, kid-friendly, and has that classic Route 66 vibe. Perfect after a travel day.
Day 2: Grand Canyon + Bearizona
Morning: Grand Canyon National Park
It’s about an hour drive, which is very doable with kids.
We like to keep it simple:
Hit a few viewpoints along the South Rim
Check out the visitor's center
Let the kids walk along the paths
Keep snacks handy and don’t overpack the day
Make sure to have bug spray and sunscreen
Use your America the Beautiful Pass for entrance
You really don’t need a huge plan here, the views do all the work. If your kids are runners don't be embarrased to put them on a kids leash, or a baby carrier. Seriously, there are drop offs. Our son was 3 and he was a very well behaved kid so we were fine but some kids that are runners, you might get nervous so just be safe.
Necessities:
Afternoon: Bearizona
On the way back, stop at Bearizona and your kids will love this.
Drive-through wildlife park (bears, wolves, bison)
Walk-through area with smaller animals
A fun way to break up the day after the Grand Canyon and they have great restaurants in the park to eat at
Day 3: Canyon Coaster + Head Home
Before heading home, stop at the Canyon Coaster Adventure Park - ride a roller coaster through the mountain
It’s such a fun way to end the trip:
Individual alpine coaster (you control the speed)
Great for older kids and parents too
Quick but memorable activity before driving home
Tips for Visiting Williams with Kids
Start early for the Grand Canyon (parking fills up fast)
Pack layers – it’s cooler than Phoenix, especially mornings/nights
Keep your itinerary flexible – this trip is best when it’s not rushed
Bring snacks (always 😂)
