If you're looking for a family road trip that’s educational and fun with gorgeous scenery, low costs, and even an intriguing Hollywood tie-in then Los Alamos, New Mexico should be your next trip! This is THE location where the atomic bomb was made 💥

We traveled here in April 2025 and it was for sure one of our favorite trips we have taken so I wanted to share our whole itinerary plus tips, prices, and links to make it super easy for you to plan the same trip.

🚗 Road Trip DetailsFrom Phoenix, it’s about an 8-hour drive to Los Alamos. It’s a scenic drive through the Southwest, and totally doable with kids (especially with a few fun stops along the way). On our way home we stopped in Winslow, Arizona. We explored, took pictures on "the corner" grabbed some local food and coffee and it was a good stop to break up our trip.

🗺️ Our Itinerary + What It Cost

💡 Bradbury Science Museum – FREE Interactive, hands-on learning. Our kids, and my husband, were obsessed.

💡 Manhattan Project National Historical Park – FREET ake the self-guided tour through the heart of WWII atomic bomb history.

💡 Oppenheimer Film Tour + Oppenheimer’s House – FREE Yes, you can stand outside the actual home where he lived and worked.

💡 Los Alamos Nature Center – FREE A great reset spot for little ones to learn and explore. Really great activities. I also got souvenirs here.

🥾 Bandelier National Monument – $20 per vehicle Explore both the Tsankawi Unit and the main entrance - I split these into 2 separate days.

The Tsankawi Loop Trail is hands-down one of the most epic hiking trails. Ladders, caves, so much history. Don't miss this! Pull it up on AllTrails. The views are stunning, and don’t forget to get your National Parks passport stamped at the visitor center when you go to the main entrance.

🛏️ Where To Stay

Stay at the Wingate by Wyndham:âś… Under $500 for 3 nights (breakfast included)âś… Pet-friendlyâś… Close to everythingâś… Even with 2 rooms for bigger families, total is still under $1,000

🎬 Pro Tip:Watch Oppenheimer while you’re there - it adds so much depth to everything you’ll see. It made the whole experience feel like we were walking through history in real time.

🍴 Our Favorite Local Restaurants

  • Blue Window Bistro – Get the New Mexico Christmas Enchiladas - a must while in New Mexico!

  • Sugar and Cream Coffee – A perfect morning pick-me-up, they are strong and delicious and it's the cutest little corner cafe.

  • Ruby K’s Bagels – Great for affordable lunches (our kids split a sandwich). If you like bagels, you have to stop here.

  • Beef and Leaf – Upscale, delicious dinner option if it fits your budget.

đź’ˇ Budget Tips That Made a Big Difference

✔️ Bring your own snacks! Our go-to hiking snack are these G2G protein bars - especially the peanut butter & jelly flavor. The kids love them and they’re super filling and keep you full for hours, without all the sugar. They are made in Utah with organic ingredients.

✔️ Stop at Walmart in Albuquerque It’s the closest Walmart before you reach Los Alamos. We stocked up on drinks, hotel snacks, and little extras to save money once we arrived.

✔️ Pack a cooler We always bring one for cold snacks and drinks during the road trip and hikes, it makes a big difference in price as opposed to buying snacks and drinks at the gas stations.

✔️ Don’t forget the summer essentialsFrom sun protection to electrolytes, our Arizona Summer Essentials Amazon List has everything we pack, including insect repellent and a portable cooler:👉 Shop our list here

đź’° Total Cost? Under $1,000!

With one hotel room, this entire trip comes in under $1,000 - including gas and food!

It’s the perfect mix of education, nature, and low-key family fun that still feels exciting. We all need some trips that aren't over-the-top and overstimulating.

Our kids, especially our teen, learned SO much.

📍 You could even extend your stay with a night or two in Santa Fe, which is less than an hour from Los Alamos!
